Aqaba

Aqaba
  • Aqaba City
  • Wadi Rum
  • Nestled among palm trees, on the shores of the Red Sea where the Gulf of Aqaba joins the mountains of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Israel, Aqaba is Jordan's year-round, warm-weather beach and water-sports resort. It is the perfect place to enjoy the beach and sun in a laid-back Arab town full of history, local markets and handicraft shops.

Aqaba is dazzling underwater whether a first-time snorkeler or an experienced diver, you will be amazed by its world-renowned display of underwater life, including coral, colorful fish and exotic marine plants. You can even enjoy it all without getting wet, from the deck of a glass-bottomed boat.

You can visit the small but exquisite Museum of Aqaba's History, installed in a restored traditional house and the nearby Mameluke fort or explore the recently excavated site of the medieval Islamic port town of Aylah, or simply enjoy the sun and take it easy.

  • The "Valley of the Moon" is a truly magical place, near the southernmost tip of Jordan.

Its serene, desert terrain washed with softly colored sands and wind-sculpted mountains offers both deep relaxation and high adventure. (Remember the classic film, "Lawrence of Arabia?" Many memorable scenes were filmed here). Lie back against the cushions and linger over fragrant mint tea or cardamon-flavored coffee under the "house of hair" (black Bedouin tent). Go rock-climbing and look for ancient "rock art" inscriptions. Join a Bedouin guide for a jeep tour or take a camel for a more traditional view of the desert's inner world, or fly above its canyons in a hot-air balloon. Wadi Rum seems to create a special feeling and fresh perspective in every visitor--an experience that lingers long after you return home.
