Azraq

Azraq Oasis: a UNESCO world heritage site

Azraq is a one and a half hour drive from Amman, located about 110 kilometers east of Amman, the Oasis has12 square kilometers of lush parklands, pools and gardens.  Azraq, which in Arabic means “blue”, has the only water in the entire eastern desert. The oasis is also home to a host of water buffalo and other wildlife.

Each year flocks of birds such as Honey Buzzard and Montague’s Harrier, the Ruff, Avocet, Little Stint, Kentish Plover, and the Little Ringed Plover visit Azraq, making this a must-see for any bird enthusiast.

The best time to visit Azraq is late Autumn, Winter or Spring. Winter rains often create pools and marshes over the reserve, which continue to attract many seasonal species of birds. The success of bird-watching visits depends largely on the amount of water that has accumulated in the reserve.
